TAWAU: Sabah police and North Kalimantan (Kaltara) regional police are set to formalise a comprehensive bilateral cooperation agreement this year covering administration, security, and cross-border crime.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said establishing this official understanding is essential as no formal ties exist with Kaltara since it separated from East Kalimantan in 2012.
Speaking at the Tawau district police chief handing-over ceremony on Monday, he explained that upcoming bilateral meetings aim to streamline joint actions and ensure rapid responses to emerging border issues, particularly with Indonesia moving its administrative capital to Nusantara.
Jauteh also highlighted that the new Tawau police chief, Assistant Commissioner Rosdi Mat Jusoh, must maintain high commitment and strategic focus due to Tawau's proximity to both Indonesia and the Philippines.
He urged Tawau police to intensify crackdowns on drug smuggling and trafficking, warning against allowing the district to remain a transit hub for cross-border crime into Kalimantan.
