Sabah loses veteran activist

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah activist Beverly Joeman, a former Bersih Sabah Vice-Chairperson, died at 12.23pm on Monday at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here after nearly three months battling acute myeloid leukaemia, a cancer of the blood and bone.

She was 56.

Beverly, affectionately known as Bev, served as Bersih Sabah Vice-Chairperson from 2016 to 2023.

She leaves behind three children, along with a wide network built over years of grassroots activism in the State.

In a statement here, Monday, the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) Steering Committee said Beverly was a steadfast campaigner for justice who stood firm against oppression throughout her life.

She loved people regardless of skin colour, race or religion and devoted her life to championing human rights and defending those who were marginalised.

“Our country, and Sabah in particular, has lost a genuine fighter for democracy. Beverly’s thoughts, words and actions always aimed to uplift human dignity and keep the nation on a path of justice, freedom and wellbeing for the people.

“The entire Bersih family extends its condolences to the family of the late Beverly Joeman. Thank you for your kindness and the path you paved for activism. May you rest in peace,” read the statement.
