Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Medical Services Union (SMSU) welcomed the Health Ministry’s move to review the On-Call Allowance (Elaun Tugas Atas Panggilan – ETAP), which is expected to be presented to the Cabinet soon, with improvements targeted by 2026.

SMSU President and Sabah Ceupacs Chairman Ajulahin Japin said the allowance is vital in recognising the dedication and contributions of healthcare workers, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak.

“We acknowledge the significant role of allowances in recognising the dedication and contributions of healthcare workers in Sabah and Sarawak.

“The proposed increase in ETAP reflects a positive step toward addressing the needs of our healthcare professionals, ensuring their welfare and maintaining the quality of healthcare services across Malaysia,” he said.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad had earlier said that the review is part of ongoing efforts to improve incentives and welfare for healthcare workers.

Currently, Health Ministry staff receive various allowances, including the Critical Service Incentive, Specialist Incentive, Post-Office Hours Allowance, and Elective Surgery Allowance. These are reviewed regularly to ensure fair compensation, especially for those serving in remote areas.
