As the world becomes increasingly aware of the importance of conservation and sustainable travel, Sabah continues to shine as a beacon of how nature and humanity can coexist harmoniously. It is a gem on the island of Borneo, is affectionately known as “The Land Below the Wind” as though it exists on a separate planet known as the “Lost World.” This nickname not only captures the imagination but also reflects the geographical with a blend of nature and cultural richness of this Malaysian region. Sabah's nickname stems from its location just south of typhoon-prone region near the Philippines, making it effectively “below” the typhoons thus protected from the devastating effects. The term was popularised by American author Agnes Newton Keith in her book “Land Below the Wind” which chronicles her good life in Borneo before World War 11.

The spirit of Malaysian people regardless of the regions makes the country great. Mamu said, “We've learned to live together in harmony, understanding & respect with a proud sense of unity to be Malaysian.” Photo: Zul

My memories about Sabah's greenery of lush rainforests, majestic mountains - the home to Mount Kinabalu (one of the highest Asia's highest peaks), and a spectacular coastline, triggered when engaged in a conversation with Mamu Khalid Merican, a retired OCPD Tauran when he & wife, visited their daughter, Yati and family in Putrajaya recently. Mamu is comfortably settled for good in Tauran. Together with his cousin, Faroque (a retired civil servant), I've visited Mamu's home & orchard overlooking the peaceful beach in Sabah.

Sabah is no stranger to me as in 1986-87, my employer, Petronas Carigali then assigned me to Petronas Temengor offshore operations in Kudat & Kota Kinabalu. For adventure with guidance of my kind & hospitable colleagues, I had the opportunity to visit the pristine beaches of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, Danum Valley, and connect with nature.

I understand most travellers from all regions in Malaysia & overseas seeking real adventure & cultural immersion have visited this unique & peaceful greenery destination in Sabah.
