Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Motor Day (SMD) should be improved with stricter conditions, greater discipline and civic responsibility following concerns raised after the event at the Likas Sports Complex last week, said Sabah Government Backbenchers Club (BBC) Chairman Datuk Masiung Banah.
Masiung said he supported the motoring event, which reportedly drew more than 70,000 motorcycle enthusiasts from Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Labuan, and believed it had tourism potential, but suggested incorporating community initiatives such as blood donation drives.
He said future organisers should work with the Road Transport Department (RTD), police, Immigration Department and local authorities to ensure participants have valid identification, driving licences, insurance and road tax, while police could also conduct random urine tests.
Masiung said the proposed measures followed complaints of rubbish being left at the venue and allegations that some participants and roadside traders were foreigners without identification documents or valid motorcycle licences.
He said RTD could provide free motorcycle safety inspections and check licences and road tax, while the Immigration Department could verify identification documents and local authorities could provide adequate cleanliness facilities for traders and participants.
