Kota Kinabalu: Sabah must continue embracing innovation, technological advancement and strategic partnerships to strengthen its role in Malaysia's energy future while supporting sustainable economic growth, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said.
He said the global energy sector is undergoing rapid transformation driven by rising demand, technological advances, changing market dynamics, geopolitical developments and growing environmental considerations, making energy security increasingly important for economic growth, industrial development and societal well-being.
Officiating at the opening of the 13th Sabah Oil, Gas & Energy Conference & Exhibition 2026 (SOGCE 2026) at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Thursday, Joachim, who is also Works and Utilities Minister, said Sabah's natural resources, strategic location and growing industrial capabilities position the State to strengthen its contribution to the nation's energy sector while expanding opportunities in renewable energy and sustainable technologies.
He said the energy sector would remain a key driver under the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) agenda, with the State Government committed to supporting sustainable investment, industry competitiveness and workforce development through infrastructure, good governance, education, technical and vocational training, research, and industry-academia collaboration.
Joachim also welcomed international delegates, diplomats and industry leaders to SOGCE 2026, saying the conference continues to serve as an important platform for dialogue, collaboration and investment, while encouraging participants to forge partnerships that will advance innovation, strengthen the energy sector and deliver sustainable growth for Sabah and the wider region.
