AT just 25 years old, Chan Loong Wei has been announced as Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate for the Luyang state seat, making him one of the youngest contenders in Sabah’s 17th State Election (PRN17).

Chan, who has served with DAP Sabah since 2019 and is currently head of DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sabah, said his nomination reflects a commitment to recognising young leaders in the state.

“Although I am nominated in Luyang, for me this candidacy is a recognition for young people, especially from Gen Z, to become leaders in the state. It also shows DAP is sincerely giving opportunities to youth in winnable seats, not merely to fill a quota,” he said after the party’s announcement.

Chan will replace outgoing Luyang incumbent and DAP Sabah chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, who is contesting the Likas seat. Luyang, located within the Kota Kinabalu parliamentary constituency, has been a DAP stronghold since 2013, with Jin Zhe winning the previous election in 2020 by a majority of over 14,000 votes.

Focusing on local development, Chan pledged to address issues affecting all residents, including the elderly.

“In Luyang, there are many senior citizens, so attention to their mobility is important. Traffic congestion, parking problems, and public transport need to be addressed, including providing buses that reach residential areas,” he said.

Chan also highlighted plans to improve parking at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and to enhance the Lido commercial area, aiming to make it more organised and comfortable for residents.

DAP Sabah is prioritising youth in its candidate selection for PRN17, with half of its nominees being young or new faces.

Other newcomers include Tang Szu Ching, 28, contesting Tanjung Papat, and Philip Yap, 40, contesting Sri Tanjong. Established leaders, such as Kota Kinabalu MP and DAP Sabah deputy chairman Datuk Chan Foong Hin, and Sandakan MP and DAP secretary Vivian Wong Shir Yee, will also contest, in Tanjung Aru and Elopura respectively. - November 9, 2025
