Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s Covid-19 caseload dipped below the 200 mark Monday, with 164 cases reported, a decrease of 44 from Sunday’s 208.

Sabah’s Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the decrease may not necessarily indicate that the situation has improved.

“As usual, fewer test samples are collected on weekends than on weekdays. Even with a high positivity rate of 14.5 per cent, it provided a lower daily positive figure with only 1,465 test samples,” he said in a statement, Monday.

Compared to areas where new cases rose, more districts saw a decline in daily infections.

On Sunday, Sandakan reported 23 cases but none on Monday. The same with Lahad Datu which on Monday had zero cases after recording 12 cases the previous day.

In Penampang, there were only 13 cases compared to 30 on Sunday.

However, there were 120 new cases in Kota Kinabalu, an increase of 16 cases from the previous day’s figure.

In Kota Kinabalu, sporadic infections accounted for up to 71.6 per cent of new cases on Monday, indicating a high risk of infection in the district.

“If we ignore the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and advice, the number of infections could keep rising,” he warned.

On Monday, Tenom and Pitas, which had no infections on Sunday, registered new cases.

Only one district, Penampang, registered additional double-digit cases, in addition to Kota Kinabalu, which recorded three-digit cases.

A total of 163 of the 164 cases that were reported on Monday were in categories one or two, while one case was in category four.
