Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, the Sabah Umno chairman, addressed criticism of the "Sabah Maju Jaya" (SMJ) slogan under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government, stating that it does not indicate disrespect to the official state motto.

Bung Moktar explained that the GRS government's use of the state's official motto as its development call sign allows people to either support or criticize it based on the state government's efforts. He emphasized that people have high expectations from the slogan, hoping to see more sustainable changes in progress and development in Sabah.

Regarding criticism of the SMJ slogan, Bung Moktar clarified that people questioning the GRS-introduced development plan are not disrespecting or caring less for Sabah. He highlighted the difference between the GRS slogan and Sabah's Coat of Arms, which shares a similar motto.

During the GERAK17 Sabah Umno programme for the Sugud constituency in Beluran, Bung Moktar emphasized the importance of addressing basic infrastructure needs such as better roads, stable and clean water and electricity supply, and a growing economy, which currently are not being adequately met, affecting people's daily lives.

Bung Moktar also noted that the "Sabah Maju Jaya" motto in the Sabah Coat of Arms, introduced on Sept 16, 1988, is still respected by the people. He affirmed Umno's commitment to its slogan 'Bersatu, Bersetia, Berkhidmat (United, Loyal, and Serve)' in continuing to serve the people of Sabah.

Previously, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor criticized certain political parties for mocking or ridiculing the SMJ slogan, reminding them that it is the state's official motto.

However, Bung Moktar's comments come amidst a backdrop of growing discontent among Sabahans regarding the pace and direction of development in the state. Many feel that despite the lofty promises of the SMJ slogan, tangible improvements in their quality of life have yet to materialize.

Critics argue that slogans and mottos, while symbolic, do little to address the pressing issues faced by the people of Sabah. They point to the state's struggling healthcare system, inadequate education facilities, and high poverty rates as evidence that the government's priorities may be misplaced.

In response, Bung Moktar emphasized the importance of constructive criticism and feedback from the public. He acknowledged that there is still much work to be done to fulfill the promises of the SMJ slogan and improve the lives of all Sabahans.

As the debate over the SMJ slogan continues, it remains to be seen whether the GRS government can translate its motto into meaningful change on the ground. For now, the people of Sabah continue to watch and wait, hoping that their voices will be heard and their needs addressed.

Despite the challenges, Bung Moktar remains optimistic about Sabah's future. He believes that with the right policies and actions, the state can overcome its obstacles and achieve true progress and prosperity for all its people.

As the debate over the SMJ slogan continues, it serves as a reminder of the importance of meaningful and sustainable development. While slogans and mottos can inspire, real change requires concrete actions and policies that address the root causes of poverty, inequality, and underdevelopment.

Ultimately, the success of the SMJ slogan will be measured not by words or symbols, but by the tangible improvements in the lives of Sabahans. It is a challenge that the GRS government, under Bung Moktar's leadership, is committed to meeting head-on.

In conclusion, the debate over the "Sabah Maju Jaya" slogan reflects a broader desire among Sabahans for genuine progress and development. It is a call to action for the government to prioritize the needs of the people and work towards a brighter future for all Sabahans.
