The commitment of the Sabah government to combat drug abuse and support initiatives aimed at addressing the drug problem in the state remains steadfast, affirmed Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Speaking on behalf of the government, he underscored the importance of collaboration with the Home Ministry (KDN) to tackle this pressing issue effectively.
Addressing participants at the AADK Community Programme, held as part of the state-level 2024 Anti-Drug Day celebration in Tawau, Hajiji reiterated the government's call for concerted efforts from various stakeholders. He urged the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), Sabah Youth Council (MBS), federal and state agencies, private sector entities, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to join forces in implementing drug prevention education programmes, particularly in high-risk areas.
Expressing concern over the vulnerability of at-risk youth to drug addiction, Hajiji emphasized the need for robust public awareness campaigns on drug abuse. He highlighted the pivotal role that organizations like the MBS and its affiliates can play in safeguarding at-risk youth and steering them away from the dangers of substance abuse.
Furthermore, Hajiji reaffirmed the state government's commitment to human capital development in Sabah, aligning with the goals outlined in the Sabah Development Master Plan. Initiatives such as the Young Pioneers Programme under the MBS aim to nurture talent, unlock potential, and foster entrepreneurship among at-risk youth, providing them with viable alternatives to drug-related activities.
In addition to preventive measures, Hajiji highlighted the government's efforts in providing support and access to treatment for individuals struggling with drug addiction. The construction of the Narcotics Rehabilitation Centre (PUSPEN) in Tawau signifies a significant step forward in this endeavor, offering comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation services to those in need.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Tawau PUSPEN, officiated by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya on behalf of Chief Minister Hajiji, marks a milestone in the state's commitment to combating drug abuse. Located strategically along the Tawau-Kunak highway, this facility will serve as a vital resource for individuals in the eastern coast of Sabah seeking assistance in overcoming addiction and reclaiming their lives.
As Sabah continues its proactive stance against drug abuse, collaboration, innovation, and community engagement will remain key pillars in the fight against this societal scourge. With collective effort and unwavering determination, the state aims to create a safer and healthier environment for its citizens, particularly its youth, paving the way for a brighter future.
