KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is set to pioneer sustainable resource management by balancing biodiversity conservation with economic growth under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

Delivering his policy address at the opening of the 17th State Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Head of State Tun Musa Aman announced that Sabah aims to lead the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement in Malaysia, utilizing voluntary carbon markets to fund conservation.

The State is also preparing for a significant transfer of environmental powers under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), starting with scheduled waste management by November.

Furthermore, Sabah has been designated as the national Blue Economy hub, with plans currently underway for a Blue Economy Industrial Park in Kudat and the establishment of the Sabah Blue Economy Council.

To support these shifts, the Government will amend land-related legislation this year to improve building management and strata title efficiency, while deploying satellite technology to monitor forest restoration and timber legality.
