Kota Kinabalu: The safety of visitors is a top priority as Sabah prepares to welcome Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2026, said Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chief Executive Officer Julinus Jeffrey Jimit.
“Safety is a key factor in how people choose their destination. When visitors are in good hands, it strengthens their confidence and overall experience,” he said during the closing of the 2nd defensive driving course at the Sabah International Convention Centre.
Organised by the Sabah Enhanced Travel Innovation Association (Setia) and conducted by Sabah Skills and Technology Centre (SSTC) trainer Jason Richard Rajah, the two-day course prepares drivers for the influx of tourists expected next year.
Julinus highlighted the crucial role drivers and guides play as the first point of contact for visitors.
“The way they ensure safety and comfort on the road shapes how visitors perceive Sabah. Well-trained, confident frontliners reflect the professionalism we aim for across the tourism sector,” he said.
He added that preparing drivers and guides is part of STB’s effort to boost Sabah’s domestic and international visibility, presenting the state as a welcoming, well-managed destination capable of delivering safe and memorable experiences.
Setia Chairman Christina Wahida Kong said the course focuses on passenger safety and will continue as a long-term programme to enhance frontliners’ skills.
“Drivers are the frontliners who ensure the comfort and safety of tourists. No matter how beautiful the destination, it won’t matter without properly trained and professional drivers,” she said.
