Kota Kinabalu: Sabah must accelerate the adoption of renewable energy solutions, including solar power and battery energy storage systems, to reduce dependence on diesel and build a more sustainable energy future.
Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said Sabah’s abundant natural resources, particularly sunlight, could be harnessed to provide cleaner, more reliable and affordable electricity.
“Energy was a fundamental requirement in modern life,” he said, adding that homes, industries, hospitals, schools and almost anything with a motor depended on power to operate.
Speaking at the “Powering Sabah Beyond Diesel” solar and battery energy storage showcase organised by BSL Eco Energy and Huawei here on Sunday, Joachim, who is also Works and Utilities Minister, said fossil fuels remained widely used but carried environmental costs.
He said solar power combined with battery energy storage could help capture Sabah’s natural resources while improving electricity access, connectivity and opportunities, especially for rural communities.
