Their unwelcomed antics has since earned themselves a sharp rebuke from Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who chastised them for damaging Kelantan’s reputation as a potential tourist state.
‘Sad and embarrassing!’
In a Facebook post, Loke expressed dismay over news reports of the incident, saying that it was a “sad and embarrassing” affair.
He also lamented how millions of Ringgit being poured into the project by the government as a way to improve tourism numbers in the state had effectively gone down the drain.
“The Federal Government spent nearly RM450 million to upgrade the Kota Bharu Airport to ensure better air connectivity for Kelantan, to serve as a catalyst for the socio-economic development of its people, and to attract more tourists.
“The behavior of these ‘mat rempits’ in front of the departure hall of the new terminal not only endangers the lives of the public, but it’s also considered an act of sabotage against the safety and economy of Kelantan.”
Strict action to be taken
Loke also said that he had instructed the Director of Enforcement of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to carry out large-scale enforcement operations in the area.
Anyone caught street racing in front of the airport will have their motorcycles seized immediately.
“I have also requested the management of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) to tighten entry and exit access to the terminal building to curb this issue.”
The issue first came to light after a video showing the ‘mat rempits’ mulling around the departure hall went viral on X, triggering a wave of outrage among netizens.
