Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has found himself at the center of controversy after admitting that he had to turn to modeling to secure funds for his constituents.
The former youth and sports minister, who previously pulled out from the government backbencher bloc, claimed he was forced to take an unconventional approach to raise funds after being denied government allocations.
During a parliamentary session on 18 February 2025, Saddiq revealed that despite multiple attempts to negotiate for government funding, his requests were unsuccessful. As a result, he resorted to collaborating with a fashion brand, which ultimately helped him secure RM1 million in donations for Muar constituents." I have repeatedly applied for allocations but was unsuccessful... which is why I turned to modeling. Some MPs were upset that I took this route, but I had no choice. In the end, I managed to secure a RM1 million donation for the Muar constituents," he said.
Funding Struggles and Political Fallout
Saddiq’s predicament exemplifies the chronic lack of equitable funding for opposition lawmakers. Since withdrawing from the government backbenchers, his constituency has been left without direct government financial support, a move that has further strained his ability to serve his electorate.
Despite his explanations, his decision to enter the world of fashion has drawn criticism. Pakatan Harapan’s MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid rebuked Saddiq for prioritizing his collaboration with actress Bella Astillah in promoting a Raya clothing brand rather than focusing on Muar’s needs.
This criticism highlights a broader perception that Saddiq has diverted attention away from his legislative duties. His detractors argue that instead of engaging in personal branding efforts, he should have continued pressing the government for allocations through formal channels.
Saddiq’s Challenge to the Government
In response, Saddiq has called on the government to clarify its stance on funding for opposition MPs, asserting that the issue is one of political maturity and fairness."As the MP for Muar, I have consistently pursued allocations and engaged in multiple negotiations. Following the Prime Minister’s advice, I held discussions with the Deputy Prime Minister on five occasions and sent numerous letters. Yet, after more than 400 days, the Muar parliamentary service centre has not received a single ringgit in government funding."
His frustration was evident as he accused the government of "two-faced politics", suggesting that statements made in public do not align with internal decision-making. Saddiq stressed that government funding should not be a political weapon to punish opposition-held constituencies.
A Risky Gamble?
While Saddiq’s initiative to seek alternative funding sources may seem commendable, it also raises concerns about political optics. His electorate may question whether his actions signal a lack of influence or strategic miscalculation.
After all, his departure from the government bloc, which resulted in funding cuts, was a calculated decision: one that has now placed him in a precarious position.
By stepping into the fashion world, Saddiq may have secured financial aid, but at what cost? Will Muar voters see this as an innovative effort or a desperate move that weakens his credibility?
As Malaysia moves toward more politically competitive elections, Saddiq’s gamble could either solidify his image as a maverick politician or alienate voters who expect their MP to fight within the system rather than outside of it.
