Sadiq Khan issues Labour warning after ‘bitterly disappointing’ local election results

  • London Mayor Sadiq Khan has issued a lengthy statement calling for a change of direction for Labour, and pointedly did not endorse leader Sir Keir Starmer.
  • This follows losses for the party across London in the local elections. The Green Party secured mayoralties in Hackney, Lewisham, and Waltham Forest, while the Conservatives reclaimed Westminster City Council. Reform UK also gained Havering.
  • Sir Sadiq reflected on the “bitterly disappointing” results for Labour in the capital, adding that they “speak to a far-reaching disillusionment and fracturing in our politics, which cannot be downplayed, spun or dismissed”.
  • He also said that “many people who voted Labour at the last general election clearly feel angry, disappointed and let down”, with Londoners are “frustrated with the slow pace of change”.
  • Sir Sadiq added: “Without a change in course and an acceleration in delivery, the threat to Labour is existential. We risk a repeat in London, Wales and across England of what happened in Scotland, where we have still not recovered.”
