KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Fish Marketing Sdn. Bhd. (Safma), a state-owned company under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, is actively exploring export markets to enhance the competitiveness of Sabah's fisheries industry.

Safma Chairman Datuk Mohammad Mohamarin said the initiative aligns with the state’s goal to drive natural resource-based economic growth, especially in the high-potential fisheries sector.

“With rich and high-quality marine resources, Sabah is ready to move from being just a producer to a key player in the global seafood supply chain.

"Target markets include Japan, China, and the Middle East. Safma is working with trade agencies, logistics firms, and seafood exporters to meet international standards, focusing on processing capacity, halal and food safety certification, and establishing export hubs," he said.

Mohammad added that the initiative will directly benefit local fishermen and small-scale fisheries entrepreneurs by increasing value-added opportunities and income.

He is confident the move will strengthen Sabah’s position as a high-quality seafood hub in the region and contribute to overall state economic development.
