Saga Or S70? Where's The Sweet Spot In Proton's Under-RM60K Sedan Range?

Proton's sedan range just became a little more complicated. But for buyers, that might actually be a good problem to have.

With the new S70 Lite and Prime now officially launched, Proton's sub-RM60,000 sedan line-up has grown to five choices across the Saga and S70 ranges, thanks to a RM3,000 launch rebate for the two new S70 variants.

And here's the interesting part. From the RM38,990 Saga Standard to the promotional RM59,800 S70 Prime, every one produces the same headline 120 PS and 150 Nm. That's a RM20,810 spread without gaining a single extra PS on paper.

So what exactly are you paying more for as you climb Proton's sedan ladder? And more importantly, where's the sweet spot?

Let's start with the numbers.

Sharing the same output doesn't mean all five will perform identically. Vehicle weight, transmission, gearing and calibration still matter.

What it does mean is that horsepower isn't really what you're buying as you spend more. You're paying for equipment, safety, comfort, space and eventually the jump from Saga to S70. So let's climb.

RM38,990: Saga Standard - Start Here If Price Comes First

Saga Standard establishes our baseline at RM38,990. Its 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder produces 120 PS and 150 Nm, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. That's already the same headline output you'll find at the other end of this comparison in the S70 Prime.

Naturally, the Standard makes sacrifices elsewhere. Equipment is simpler, while it gets two airbags rather than the six fitted to the Saga Premium.

WHO SHOULD LOOK HERE? Buyers primarily concerned with keeping the purchase price down. You're getting the same headline engine output, but accepting fewer convenience and safety features in return.

Add RM6,000: Saga Executive Makes Daily Life Nicer

At RM44,990, things get more comfortable. The Saga Executive adds useful everyday kit such as a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reverse camera, front parking sensors, keyless entry, LED daytime running lights and automatic headlights. The engine and 4AT remain.

In other words, that additional RM6,000 isn't buying more power.

It's buying convenience.

THE JUMP: +RM6,000 Saga Standard → Saga Executive Same 120 PS and 150 Nm. Same 4AT. The money largely goes towards equipment you'll actually interact with every day.

For buyers wanting more creature comforts without approaching RM50,000, this is where the Saga range starts getting particularly interesting.

Another RM5,000 Gets You The Saga Premium

At RM49,990, the Saga Premium swaps the 4AT for a CVT while retaining the same 120 PS and 150 Nm output. But its biggest advantage isn't necessarily the transmission.

It's safety.

The Premium gets six airbags and a fuller suite of active-safety functions that includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Rear Collision Warning (RCW) and Door Opening Warning (DOW).

And that's important because something unusual happens when we spend even more money.

SAFETY HIGH ON YOUR LIST? Remember the Saga Premium's RM49,990 price. It gets six airbags and forward-facing ADAS including AEB. The more expensive S70 Lite and Prime do not get AEB.

That makes the Premium more than simply the fanciest Saga. It becomes one of the most interesting stops on this entire ladder.

Add RM6,810: Now You're In An S70 Lite

Here's the big jump.

Proton officially prices the S70 Lite at RM59,800, but its RM3,000 launch rebate brings that down to RM56,800 until Dec 31, 2026. That puts just RM6,810 between the Saga Premium and S70 Lite right now. And this time, you're not merely buying another Saga variant...

You're stepping into the larger S70.

Proton is specifically pitching space as one of the NA S70's strengths, claiming class-leading length and wheelbase, a wide cabin for three rear occupants and an almost-flat rear floor.

The Lite also gets six airbags, ESC, electronic parking brake, cruise control, 16-inch alloys, an 8-inch infotainment unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reverse camera, remote engine start and rear parking sensors.

Safety equipment includes five rear-side radar functions: Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Door Opening Warning and Rear Collision Warning. But there is a catch...

No AEB.

Neither naturally aspirated S70 variant gets the forward-facing driver-assistance package found on the cheaper Saga Premium.

So this isn't a simple case of spending RM6,810 and getting "more car" in every possible respect.

THE BIG DECISION: SAGA PREMIUM → S70 LITE Pay now: +RM6,810 Gain: Entry into the larger S70, more space and its accompanying equipment. Trade-off: The S70 Lite does not retain forward ADAS such as AEB offered by the Saga Premium. Bottom line: More expensive doesn't automatically mean more safety equipment.

But If You Want An S70, There's A RM3,000 Problem

This is perhaps the most interesting pricing decision Proton has made.

After rebate:

S70 Lite: RM56,800

S70 Prime: RM59,800

That's only RM3,000.

Both use Proton's 1.5-litre i-GT naturally aspirated engine producing 120 PS and 150 Nm, paired with a torque-converter CVT.

But Prime adds automatic LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, leatherette seats, leatherette steering wheel, automatic air-conditioning, front parking sensors and auto-folding door mirrors. That's quite a bit of equipment for a RM3,000 jump.

S70 LITE → S70 PRIME: JUST RM3,000 Prime adds: Automatic LED headlights, 17-inch alloys, leatherette seats and steering wheel, auto air-conditioning, front parking sensors and auto-folding mirrors. Same: 120 PS / 150 Nm engine and torque-converter CVT.

That doesn't make the Lite redundant. Its job is straightforward: get you into an S70 for as little as possible. But buyers who can comfortably stretch another RM3,000 have a pretty obvious comparison to make.

So, Where's The Sweet Spot?

There isn't one answer that works for everybody. That's actually what makes Proton's new sedan ladder interesting.

The biggest mistake would be assuming every step upwards automatically gets you a better-equipped car. It doesn't. The Saga Premium is particularly compelling if active safety matters because its AEB doesn't follow you into the pricier NA S70.

Meanwhile, if you've already decided you want an S70, the Prime's RM3,000 premium over the Lite deserves serious consideration.

And the Saga Executive sits quietly in the middle, adding much of the everyday convenience equipment buyers are likely to appreciate while keeping the price comfortably below RM50,000.

Buying An S70 Before Year-End?

There's another reason the current comparison is unusually tight. Proton's RM3,000 S70 launch rebate is valid for vehicles registered by Dec 31, 2026. The new NA variants also come with a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty and six free labour services.

Proton is additionally advertising nine-year financing from 2.35% p.a. and trade-in overtrade support of up to RM2,000, subject to terms and conditions and applicable promotional periods.

Once the rebate ends, the regular S70 Lite and Prime prices return to RM59,800 and RM62,800 respectively. That means today's sub-RM60,000 ladder won't necessarily look the same in 2027.

For now though, Malaysian buyers have five ways to spend between RM38,990 and RM59,800 on a 120 PS Proton sedan.

The real question isn't how much power you want. It's what you're willing to pay more for.
