Spotted in recent road tests, the SAIC Volkswagen ID.ERA 5X is a highly anticipated mid-size, fully electric vehicle. Take note that despite the ID prefix that has come to mean electric across VW’s global lineup, there is also a variant (the ID. Era 5S) that runs a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Serving as the first all-electric vehicle in the ID.ERA lineup, it is designed specifically to capture the rapidly shifting technology expectations in the Chinese market.

The mid-size SUV sports a sporty, slightly fastback-style silhouette with a roof spoiler, a full-width LED light bar, illuminated VW logo, and L-shaped daytime running lights.

Built on the same high-voltage architecture platform as its sibling (the ID.ERA 5S), it features a wheelbase of around 2,800 mm.

The vehicle is equipped with an SAIC-CATL LFP battery pack and is anticipated to achieve a driving range exceeding 600 kilometers per charge with fast-charging support.

The 5X stands out as the first in its family to feature built-in roof LiDAR and SAIC Volkswagen’s “Xingyun” intelligent driving assistance system. This system supports both urban and highway Navigation on Autopilot (NOA), full-scenario parking, and an AI-based physical world model.

Official pricing and release details have yet to be announced, but the ID.ERA 5X is slated to hit the market in late Q4.
