PAKATAN Harapan (PH) secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has dismissed suggestions that Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is currently facing issues of vote-buying ahead of its internal elections for the 2025–2028 term.
Speaking after officiating the 235th Prison Day celebration at Padang Kota Lama, in George Town on Saturday, Saifuddin, who formerly served as PKR’s secretary-general, said no formal complaints relating to money politics have been lodged with the party’s Disciplinary Board.
“I don’t believe the party has reached a point where money is being handed out in exchange for support. Vote-buying, in the sense of giving cash to gain backing, is not happening in PKR,” he told reporters.
He clarified, however, that the use of funds for logistical purposes such as meals, tents, or hotel bookings was common and should not be conflated with illicit practices.
Saifuddin, who also serves as Home Minister, acknowledged the party’s improved resources in comparison to its early years, when financial limitations meant events were held in modest venues such as food stalls and school halls. Still, he warned against ostentatious displays of wealth.
“Excessive spending may give the wrong impression. The public is sensitive to extravagance,” he said. “This party wasn’t built on financial strength. It was founded on ideals that resonated with the people. The party’s rules are very clear about what is and isn’t allowed.”
He encouraged members to report any instances of vote-buying, should they have credible evidence, to the Disciplinary Board for immediate action.
His remarks come in the wake of comments by PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who had earlier acknowledged the risk of vote-buying, calling it one of the most difficult forms of corruption to prove.
On the upcoming contest for the party’s deputy presidency between Rafizi and Nurul Izzah Anwar, Saifuddin noted both individuals have made significant contributions to PKR. He urged the party’s 29,000 delegates to assess their choices carefully.
The PKR National Congress, including Youth and Wanita assemblies, is set to take place from 21 to 24 May in Johor Bahru, with internal polling scheduled for 23 May. - May 17, 2025
