HOME Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will file an appeal at the Court of Appeal following the Alor Setar High Court's decision in the defamation suit brought against him by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
In a statement shared via Facebook, Saifuddin said he respected the court’s decision but believed there were “strong legal grounds” to challenge the ruling.
“After reviewing the decision with my legal team, I am of the view that there are solid legal grounds for an appeal. I have therefore instructed my solicitors to immediately file the necessary appeal at the Court of Appeal,” he stated.
Saifuddin also confirmed his intention to seek a stay of execution on the High Court’s decision pending the outcome of the appeal.
He added that his earlier statements, made on 14 and 15 July 2023 and which formed the basis of the defamation suit, were delivered in his capacity as a public official acting in the interest of transparency and accountability.
“I wish to emphasise that all my statements were made based on my responsibility to speak on matters of public interest. I will continue to uphold the principles of openness, integrity and accountability as the foundation of a functioning democracy,” he said.
The defamation lawsuit stems from remarks made by Saifuddin in July 2023. While expressing appreciation to the court for its time and consideration, the Home Minister reaffirmed his trust in the legal process and the rule of law.
“As someone who respects the rule of law, I believe the judiciary will allow me the space to present my arguments and defend the truth,” he added. - August 24, 2025
