SHAH ALAM, Feb 20 — The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has consented to the appointment of Senator Datuk Salehuddin Saidin as the new Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) chairman, effective March 1.

The Selangor Royal Office said that Salehuddin is replacing Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, who requested to step down due to health reasons.

In a statement today, it said that His Royal Highness consented to Abdul Aziz’s request effective February 28.

Sultan Sharafuddin ordered the position to be filled immediately as the Ruler is deeply concerned about the state’s administration, management, and development of Islamic affairs.

Salehuddin, 62, is a former head of the Classified Case/Public Interest Unit at the Attorney General’s Chambers and was appointed a Dewan Negara senator on July 22 last year for a two-year term.

The Perak native holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from University Malaya.

Salehuddin has also been a member of Mais since 2007, a Selangor Council of the Royal Court member since 2016, and has been part of the special committee to review the competency of the State Legislative Assemblies to enact Islamic laws since 2013.

Meanwhile, His Royal Highness thanked Abdul Aziz for his dedication and excellence in carrying out his duties as Mais chairman since his appointment in 2021, praying for Abdul Aziz to always be in Allah’s protection and blessed with recovery and good health.
