KUALA LUMPUR – KD Pendekar, a Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) gunboat, experienced flooding following a leak on the vessel today and salvaging operations are currently underway.
According to a statement by RMN, the leak was caused after the vessel's hull collided with an object underwater.
The incident occurred at noon during a Navy operation two nautical miles from Tg Penyusop, Johor, RMN said.
"The leak was detected after water began rushing in the vessel's engine room.
"All crew members were safely evacuated after efforts to control the leak and stabilise the ship failed.
"RMN's focus now is to salvage the vessel,” the statement reads.
The navy also thanked the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and police which were involved in the rescue operations.
Also known as a fast-attack craft, KD Pendekar is part of the Handalan class of vessels developed in Sweden.
Gunboats or fast attack craft often operate close to land.
RMN currently operates four Handalan class vessels including KD Pendekar, KD Pendekar, KD Gempita and KD Handalan. – August 25, 2024
