Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide looks a lot like the iPhone Fold

It's shaping up to be the year of the squat-looking foldables. Next week, Samsung is expected to unveil a series of new devices at Galaxy Unpacked, and if the rumours are to be believed, one of them will be a new Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide – a shorter, wider version that’ll replace the regular Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Giving the foldable an all-new look, the Z Fold 8 Wide (which could actually just be called the Z Fold 8) is rumoured to ditch the tall, narrow silhouette for a wider, more book-like design that unfolds into an iPad Mini-like tablet.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because Apple’s first folding phone – the iPhone Ultra, which is predicted to launch in September – could look exactly the same. Featuring a wide aspect ratio, the phone could launch alongside the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Ultra, which will replace the current Z Fold.

Here’s everything we know so far about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, from release date and price to design and features.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide: Release date and price

Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked takes place on 22 July, which is when the tech giant is expected to launch its new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. The keynote will take place at 2pm BST.

Pre-orders will open immediately after Galaxy Unpacked, with pricing being unveiled during the presentation.

According to a report from reliable insider WinFuture, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will cost €1,999 – thats the same price as the Z Fold 7. That means it’s unlikely to receive a price hike in the UK. The publication also says the Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8 will receive a €100 price hike, making the new wide-ratio foldable the cheapest out of the folding models.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide: Design and display

Ditching the tall, narrow design, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is predicted to adopt a much wider design that’s like opening up a book.

Android Headlines dropped the biggest design leak on 14 July. Official-looking marketing images show renders of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, showing the phone off in all its wider-aspect glory. The publication says the wider Fold will also be offered in an online-exclusive pistachio green colour. Those same renders also show a less-visible display crease.

For months, leakers have also claimed the Z Fold 8 Wide will feature a 4:3 inner display and a 4.7:3 cover screen, giving it an almost iPad-like aspect ratio when unfolded. That’s very interesting, given multiple reports suggest Apple's first foldable iPhone will also adopt a 4:3 inner display. So both phones could look incredibly similar when they launch.

Samsung leaker Ahmed Qwaider also claims the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will measure 123.9 x 81.9 x 9.7mm when folded and just 4.5mm thick when unfolded, while weighing 201g.

Samsung has also officially unveiled a new display architecture called Flex Titanium, which will debut on the Z Fold 8 Wide. The company says the titanium-alloy structure makes the display more durable, while reducing the visibility of the crease.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide: Specs and cameras

Samsung has already confirmed one thing regarding the Galaxy Z Fold 8. It will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip, which should give the phones a big performance boost over the current Fold, ideal for those performance-intensive AI features.

But there are plenty of spec rumours to dig through. According to Ahmed Qwaider, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will boast 12GB of RAM and a choice of 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage. It could also include a 4,800mAh battery with 45W wired charging.

The camera rumours are a little disappointing, however. Qwaider claims the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide won’t feature the triple-camera system found on previous Galaxy Z Fold models. It will reportedly feature a dual 50MP rear camera, with one main and one ultra-wide lens.

There may also be two 10MP selfie cameras, one in the cover display and another on the inner screen. Again, that sounds remarkably similar to the iPhone Ultra’s camera array.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide: Features

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to launch with Samsung’s One UI 9, which is based on Android 17. Samsung will no doubt announce a swathe of new Galaxy AI features at Galaxy Unpacked.

According to SamMobile, One UI 9 will bring onboard a Tap to Share feature, similar to Apple’s AirDrop. It will let you transfer photos, videos and files by bumping two compatible Galaxy devices together. There will reportedly be new Bixby widgets as well, with larger quick settings tiles and accessibility improvements including Select to Speak and Text Spotlight. For now, it seems like a minimal update that is focused on quality-of-life updates.

In terms of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide itself? In early April, Android Authority found hidden One UI 9 animations that demonstrate how Samsung's cover screen mirroring feature works on the new foldable. In the animation, apps and content seem to transition from the cover display to the larger inner screen when you unfold the device. It doesn’t interrupt what you’re doing.
