Sand lorry’s steering failure led to fatal collision in Teluk Intan

NINE members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident at Kilometre 15, Jalan Sungai Manik in Teluk Intan, Perak, around 9am on Tuesday.

Hilir Perak District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin confirmed that all deceased were FRU personnel.

“All the victims were taken to hospital. Five were initially treated in the Red Zone and four in the Yellow Zone. However, updated reports confirm that one more victim from the Red Zone has died.

“This brings the total number of fatalities to nine. Two remain in the Red Zone and seven others in the Yellow Zone,” he told Buletin TV3.

The truck driver involved in the incident has been detained, and police are investigating under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“A technical investigation is also underway to support a comprehensive inquiry. So far, seven urine tests conducted on individuals involved have returned negative,” Dr Bakri added.

Post-mortem examinations were scheduled to begin at 2.30pm and expected to conclude by 8pm.

“All remains will be prayed over at the surau of the Hilir Perak District Police Headquarters before being returned to Unit 5 FRU for final honours,” he said.

The tragedy, which took place at approximately 8.51am, involved an FRU lorry carrying 18 officers and a sand truck, which is believed to have suffered a steering failure.

Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin confirmed the FRU vehicle was returning to Ipoh after completing duties for the Chitrapournami celebrations in Teluk Intan.

“Upon reaching the crash site, the police vehicle was struck head-on by the sand truck, which had reportedly lost steering control,” he said in a statement.

He added that eight FRU personnel and the truck driver were killed at the scene, while six others were seriously injured and four sustained minor injuries.

“All victims were rushed to Teluk Intan Hospital. Perak Police extend their heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims,” he said.

It was later confirmed that the driver of the trailer lorry involved in the fatal collision with a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) police truck in Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, has died while receiving treatment in hospital, raising the death toll in the tragic incident to ten. - May 13, 2025
