SANDAKAN: Sandakan requires about 180 million litres of water per day, but the current supply stands at only 169 million litres daily, creating a shortfall for consumers.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also Works and Utilities Minister, said the situation is worsened by limited alternative water sources and ageing pipelines in several areas.
He said although more than 30 tube wells exist in Sandakan, only eight are currently capable of supplying water to users.
Joachim said long-term planning is needed, including sourcing water from the Segaliud and Kinabatangan water treatment plants, although the installation of new pipelines will take time.
He said water supply in Sandakan currently relies on the Hilltop and Sibuga treatment plants, while tube well rehabilitation efforts will also be carried out, with the aim of meeting demand within two years.
