SANDAKAN: The issue of global warming needs to be taken seriously.
Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee said Sandakan has also been feeling the impact in recent months with rising temperatures and consequently reduced water supply in the area.
“In this matter, it is important for everyone to work together to maintain environmental sustainability and cleanliness,” she said.
“Sandakan has long been known as the Nature City, and we hope this glory can be maintained and regained by preserving the beauty of Sandakan,” she said when closing the Sandakan Sustainable Community Carnival at The Piazza Harbour Mall.

Ramasamy Kuppan, among others.
The one-day programme included activities such as plogging (picking up trash while walking or running), environmental talks, children’s costume competitions using recycled materials, donations of used clothes, games and books, poster drawing and colouring competitions based on the carnival theme and a “trash to cash” programme.
Vivian praised the carnival and hoped it could continue to achieve its intended purpose.
Meanwhile, Head of MPS Town Planning and Architecture Department, Mohd Kazroy Nizam Sani, said MPS has planned several cleanliness programmes involving the local community and hopes for good cooperation among Sandakan residents.
Earlier, in Henry’s speech text read by Farizal, he said the carnival was a programme specifically designed as a continuation of the launch of the Sandakan Sustainable Community Agenda 2023-2027 last year.
He said the carnival aimed to expose the community to the cultivation of a sustainable lifestyle in line with the Sabah Ministry of Local Government and Housing’s aspiration to create a Low Carbon Society.
“MPS is always committed to ensuring that our town remains in a conducive state to achieve a more sustainable standard of living with a prosperous environment.
“Various efforts are being made to ensure Sandakan is not left behind other towns in Malaysia in particular,” he said.
He added that the Council is also developing a collaboration with Urbanice Malaysia for the preparation of a Voluntary Local Review and SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Roadmap for Sandakan Municipal Council.
“This initiative aligns with the Council’s aspiration to create a liveable city for the wellbeing of Sandakan people.”
At the end of last April, the Council also received the Asean Clean Tourist City Standards 2024-2026 Award at the national level in Putrajaya.
“This rating proves that Sandakan can stand on par with other cities in the country,” said Henry.
He called on all Sandakan communities to continue being responsible citizens and to be tolerant of one another in maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of the city.
“Active community involvement at various levels must be strengthened to ensure Sandakan remains sustainable, beautiful and becomes one of the cleanest cities in Sabah,” he said.
