SANDAKAN: Sandakan Member of Parliament, Vivian Wong hopes that the relevant departments can resolve the road congestion problem here with the construction of new roads.

She said creating a conducive and good transport system contribute to the economy and development as well.

After the relocation of the “Sigah” icon at the roundabout in Donggongon Town, Penampang, to make way for road upgrading works there, she said she received messages from the local community urging her to carry out similar project for the district.

Among the congested roads in the district are the areas around the eagle and crocodile roundabouts.

She said these needed to be upgraded immediately as thousands of motorists use these roads every day and were always congested during peak hours.

“It is estimated that the distance between the eagle and crocodile roundabouts at Batu 7 Sandakan is around 950m. The two routes also have several schools, industrial areas, housing, commercial centres and they are among the routes to Sandakan airport,” said Vivian.

She said it was important for the relevant parties to think about the need for flyover construction in an effort to overcome the traffic congestion.

Vivian had previously held meetings with Public Works Department officials about the issue.

She hoped they would make a comprehensive plan as soon as possible.
