SANDAKAN: Some 136 scout members and 41 scout leaders from 12 schools from Sandakan participated in the District Camporee at Gilwell Scouts Nature Park here.

The Camporee, held on June 28-30, was also attended by 14 scout members from Indonesia and three scout leaders from Community Learning Centre (CLC) Kuari 3 Gum-gum TKB Alyakin.

The event was organised in support of Palestinian children in Gaza.

Sandakan Scout Commissioner Hanafie Hamadon said scouts are “Messengers of Peace”.

“Meanwhile, one of the activities at this camp was the Palestine poster drawing competition which was won by Alston Lam Kin Jer, while the Free Palestine poster colouring competition was won by Jhahid Zuhrie Jufri.

“Station activities were conducted to test the scouts’ various survival skills such as creating a water filter, making bread rolls, first aid, setting up a temporary hut, making a bonfire, reading a map, using a compass and archery,” he said, adding that the skills were taught by Sandakan Kelana Scouts.
