THE Sandakan Water Supply System Upgrade Project, including the construction of new water storage tanks, is now 94 per cent complete and is expected to be completed in January 2027.
Assistant Minister of Utilities and Works Datuk Limus Jury said during the State Legislative Assembly sitting on Tuesday that the project is among the State Government’s long-term measures to address water supply issues affecting residents in Karamunting, Gum-Gum, Sekong and the wider Sandakan district.
He said the Sabah Water Department (JANS) is implementing both short- and long-term initiatives to ensure a continuous, stable and consistent supply of treated water.
“The Sandakan Water Supply System Upgrade Project, including the construction of water storage tanks, is currently in the implementation phase with physical progress reaching 94 per cent and is expected to be completed in January 2027,” he said.
Limus said the project aims to reduce dependence on the direct pumping system, which places high pressure on the existing pipeline network.
“Through this project, three water storage tanks will be constructed at Batu 16 Gum-Gum with a capacity of five million litres, mile 7 Airport Road with a capacity of 10 million litres, and mile 4 Tshun Ngen with a capacity of 10 million litres, in addition to a 10-million-litre balancing tank at Batu 12 Sungai Manila,” he said.
“Once completed, the project will enable treated water from the Segaliud Water Treatment Plant to be stored and distributed more systematically.
“It is also expected to reduce operational pressure on the existing pipeline network, minimise pipe leakages and lower the district’s Non-Revenue Water (NRW) rate,” he added.
