The indefinite strike by sanitation workers, which had been continuing for the past 16 days, ended in Tarn Taran on Wednesday after the government accepted some of their demands. Balwinder Singh, president of the Safai Sewak Union, claimed the government had agreed to several demands, including a monthly wage of Rs 18,000 and the regularisation of services.
As state leaders informed the striking sanitation workers that their demands had been accepted, workers broke into celebratory bhangra, and a victory march was taken out through the town. Singh said the government had also assured consideration of other demands raised by the organisation, including restoration of the Old Pension Scheme, regular recruitment of sanitation workers, and the abolition of the contractual system. He thanked his fellow workers for maintaining discipline throughout the strike.
