The position of Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman cannot be abolished as it is explicitly provided for under the coalition’s constitution, according to PN elections director-general Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, who stressed that any leadership restructuring must adhere strictly to constitutional provisions.
Sanusi explained that decisions affecting PN’s leadership framework cannot be made unilaterally and must instead be based on consensus among all component parties, including Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and PAS. He said the coalition’s constitution clearly outlines the existence and roles of both the chairman and the presidential council, making suggestions to remove either position inconsistent with established rules.
He pointed out that the PN constitution, under Article 7, already provides for a presidential council made up of party presidents who act as advisers and oversee policy direction. However, Sanusi emphasised that this council serves a different function from the chairman’s role, which carries executive authority and includes presiding over the PN supreme council.
According to him, the chairman is responsible for managing the coalition’s executive decisions, while the presidential council focuses on policy guidance and strategic oversight. As both positions are enshrined in the constitution, he said there is no basis for eliminating one in favour of the other.
Sanusi made these remarks when speaking to reporters after attending the launch of the Kedah state-level “One Month, One Sport” programme at Wisma Darul Aman in Alor Setar on January 29.
His comments followed recent media reports indicating that Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had proposed abolishing the PN chairman’s post as part of a broader leadership reshuffle, amid ongoing internal disagreements over the coalition’s future direction and leadership succession.
Addressing the controversy, Sanusi urged all PN leaders to ensure that public statements and proposals are grounded in the coalition’s constitution to avoid unnecessary tension among member parties. He warned that comments or initiatives that appear to sidestep agreed rules could strain relations within the alliance at a time when unity is critical.
He added that PN’s stability depends on respect for its constitutional framework and collective decision-making processes, noting that any reforms or changes must follow proper channels and receive agreement from all parties involved.
