KUALA LUMPUR – Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor was the only representative from the State Government 4 (SG4) bloc to ask questions during a high-level briefing with the Prime Minister.

Fahmi’s remarks were a pointed response to recent allegations by PAS president and Marang MP Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who accused the government of misleading the public over the necessity of domestic fuel price adjustments.

Hadi had claimed there was no justification for the recent hikes, which saw diesel prices in Peninsular Malaysia rise to RM6.02 per litre amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Dismissing the claims, Fahmi argued that even major oil producers such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have had to adjust domestic fuel prices in response to global market pressures.

Speaking at a weekly media conference today, Fahmi expressed disappointment over the silence of the other three opposition-led states during the session, which included technical briefings from Petronas, the Treasury, and former Petronas chairman Tan Sri Hassan Marican.

He noted that while the Menteri Besar of Terengganu, Kelantan, and Perlis attended the meeting, none raised questions regarding the government’s fuel rationalisation policy or the broader global energy crisis.

“Out of the four Menteri Besar representing what is known as the SG4, only the Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, spoke up and asked questions. Not a single other Menteri Besar from the SG4 states raised any issues, including the reasons behind the fuel price increase,” Fahmi said.

He added that the closed-door meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, provided a comprehensive platform for state leaders to voice concerns and verify data directly with experts.

“Therefore, I am disappointed. Perhaps YB Marang, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, should have asked the Terengganu Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, to raise this matter during the meeting between the Menteri Besar, Chief Ministers, and the Prime Minister. Unfortunately, that did not happen. I am a witness,” he said.

Fahmi added that comparisons with regional neighbours such as Thailand, where diesel prices are significantly higher, demonstrate the government’s continued efforts to cushion the impact on citizens.

He urged political leaders to base their public statements on verified information presented during official briefings, rather than spreading claims that could mislead the public. - April 8, 2026
