MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M. Saravanan’s decision to cancel a planned religious debate with preacher Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu has been praised for its contribution to promoting national harmony and unity.
National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang expressed his support for Saravanan’s move, emphasising the importance of preserving peace in Malaysia’s diverse society.
Aaron applauded both Saravanan and Zamri Vinoth for their maturity in handling the situation, highlighting that Saravanan's decision was a positive and responsible step towards ensuring social harmony.
"I also appreciate the positive response from the preacher towards the decision,” Aaron said in a statement today.
“This is a great reminder for all Malaysians of the need to maintain unity and understanding among the country’s multi-religious, multi-cultural, and multi-ethnic communities.”
Aaron stressed this decision serves as a significant example for all Malaysians to continue strengthening mutual respect and unity.
"May this decision serve as an example for all of us to continue strengthening unity and mutual respect among us. This is a positive move that reminds us of the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in a diverse nation, and it should serve as a guideline for future generations," he added.
The National Unity Minister pointed out that the concept of unity should not merely remain a slogan but must be reflected in everyday actions and attitudes.
"Unity should not just be merely a slogan; it must be something we live by every day. The principles of understanding, respect, and acceptance are essential foundations for this effort. By embracing a more inclusive approach and embodying these principles, we can create a more harmonious and prosperous society," Aaron said.
Saravanan, who had been scheduled to engage in a religious debate with Zamri Vinoth, announced his decision to cancel the debate following advice from Aaron and MIC President Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran.
The decision was made with the primary concern for national unity and the importance of maintaining a peaceful coexistence in the country’s multicultural landscape. – March 11, 2025
