Sarawak can now focus on development instead of politics: Michael Tiang

MIRI – Sarawak should now be able to focus on its development agendas for 2023 without any political distractions as state polls would not be held this year, said Sarawak Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Michael Tiang.

He said this looks to be the reality for the state this year as Sarawak is not due for any election, allowing the government to clearly outline social-economic projects.

Tiang, who is Sarawak United People’s Party state assemblyman for Palawan, said a year without political distractions will be very beneficial to the rakyat.

Speaking during his Chinese New Year open house here in Sibu, Tiang noted that Sarawak had gone through two public elections, as well as a pandemic in recent years.

“We had to go through the state elections, and then the general elections, and also endured Covid-19 during the past few years.

“This year looks like a year when we can clearly focus on improving and developing society, without any more serious distractions hopefully.

“We must focus on fulfilling the promises to the rakyat we made in those election manifestos,” he said.

Tiang said his office will focus on flood mitigation, addressing urban traffic woes, and also helping improve the business situation in the Sibu township.

He called on the rakyat to continue giving their support to him to help realise his plans for a better Sibu.

Meanwhile, Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who is the federal tourism minister, held his new year open house in a community hall.

The event was attended by thousands of people from various community bodies, ethnic organisations, and business circles.

Tiong, who is Progressive Democratic Party and Dudong assemblyman, also called on the people to continue giving priority to their health.

“This is the first open house in three years after the Covid-19 pandemic. It is good that we can celebrate Chinese New Year openly again. However we must not be relaxed when it comes to our health,” he said during the open house.

“Priority on health must be given utmost attention,” he said. – The Vibes, January 23, 2023
