Sarawak's Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, has suggested that the state government is contemplating a more generous salary increment and allowances for its civil servants than what the federal government will offer to federal officers, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Abang Johari indicated that an official announcement would be made in about one-and-a-half months, following a thorough examination of the prime minister's announcement by the state government.

"We are considering slightly improving upon what the federal government has proposed for federal officials," Abang Johari, who also serves as the state finance and new economy minister, stated to reporters after participating in a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

"We will devise a comprehensive package and reveal our plans at the state level," he added, noting that this decision would have financial implications for the state government.

"This is our state's duty; we hope to be able to manage the salary increments and allowances that we will announce in one-and-a-half months," Abang Johari remarked.

During his Labour Day address to staff from various ministries and members of the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs), Anwar revealed the federal government's intention to boost civil servant salaries to "record levels" next year.

This salary hike is part of a new "human resource framework," according to Anwar, which will elevate the minimum pay for all public sector workers to RM2,000, among other measures.

While the highest increment rate previously stood at 13 percent, the prime minister promised that the new increment would be "significantly higher."

The current minimum income, which includes salary and fixed allowances, is RM1,795 per month.

Anwar has pledged to increase salaries as part of his commitment to alleviate the pressure of living costs since assuming office in 2022, and his administration has successfully stabilized inflation from its peak in the same year.
