Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg paid his final respects on June 12 to former Lingga state assemblyman Donald Lawan, who passed away on June 11 at a private hospital. Donald Lawan, aged 81, succumbed to heart failure at 6:38 PM. He was the father of Datuk Snowdan Lawan, the Deputy Minister of state Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts.
Speaking after paying his respects, Abang Johari highlighted Donald’s significant contributions to the business sector, particularly in elevating the status of Bumiputeras. Abang Johari, who has known Donald since his tenure as Sarawak's Minister of Industry and Infrastructure, praised him not only as a skilled politician but also as a highly successful businessman.
“He was a courageous individual who embraced risks in every field he ventured into,” Abang Johari remarked. “He recently shared with me his insights on renewable energy. His creativity in business was remarkable. We have lost a Dayak and Bumiputera businessman with a unique and effective approach in the business world.”
Donald Lawan first won the Lingga state seat in 1987. He later transitioned to the Bukit Begunan state seat, securing victories in the 1991 state polls and retaining the seat in the subsequent election five years later. His business ventures spanned various sectors, including vehicle sales, the hospitality industry, and property development.
The funeral service for Donald Lawan will be held at St Faith’s Anglican Church. Following the service, his remains will be interred at the Nirvana Memorial Park at 11:30 AM on Saturday, June 15.
Donald’s passing marks the end of an era for many who admired his bravery, innovation, and dedication to both his political and business endeavors. His contributions to Sarawak's socio-economic development, particularly for the Bumiputera community, are widely recognized and celebrated. His legacy is evident in the many initiatives and businesses he successfully spearheaded, leaving an indelible mark on the region’s economic landscape.
In these moments of reflection, Abang Johari’s words resonate deeply: “We have lost a visionary and a trailblazer. Donald’s impact on our community and the business sector will be remembered and appreciated for many years to come.” As friends, family, and colleagues prepare to bid farewell to Donald Lawan, they honor a life dedicated to progress, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of society.
