SARAWAK members of parliament should not be indifferent to the tabling of the Mufti Bill 2024 just because the Bill will not directly impact Sarawak, said the Society for Rights of Indigenous Peoples of Sarawak (Scrips).
Scrips secretary general Michael Jok said all Sarawakian MPs must fulfill their roles as national lawmakers to ensure the whole of Malaysia remains secular.
"Sarawak cannot say the Bill does not directly impact the state, so we Sarawakians need not care about it.
"Sarawak is part of Malaysia, so our MPs must speak up against the impacts of the Bill.
"The Bill will give tremendous powers to the Mufti to announce fatwas that will become law.
"Sarawak MPs must not allow this to happen, so please speak up for the rights of all Malaysians, not just think within the Sarawak territorial context," said Jok.
On Oct 14, a GPS state minister had said that the state government sees no reason to be worried as the Mufti Bill 2024 being tabled in Parliament has no impact on Sarawak.
Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Karim Hamzah, who is State Minister for Tourism, Culture and Arts and also State Minister for Youth and Sports, said Sarawakians should not be worried over the Bill. - October 18, 2024
