You would think that recycling reusable materials and items would be a walk in the park, right?
Unfortunately, there is a dark side to the activity and it comes it the form of collectors who have allegedly become more and more aggressive when it comes to getting the most useful stuff.
The Samudera.my Twitter page recently shared images of a recycling center in Kuching, Sarawak, where collectors have been known to break into physical fights over items they’ve found. This has caused a sense of unease and fear among the people who want to drop off their recyclable items there.
They wrote, “Recycling center ‘invaded’, people are fighting for recycled clothing. The incident of fighting for recycled goods among collectors is becoming more ‘violent’, it creates an unsafe environment for the public who just want to do some good (by donating items).”
In the pictures showcased, various collectors can be seen rummaging through the recyclable items left behind by good Samaritans.
Though unfortunately, due to their behaviour, many now would rather steer clear of the area instead of donating for the betterment of their community.
“The situation at the recycling center located in BDC (Borneo Development Corporation), Kuching, Sarawak, has resulted in the reluctance of the public to put recyclable or reusable items there,” they added.
It’s truly saddening to know that these collectors are creating such an unsafe environment where people are just trying to do some good for their community.
We genuinely hope that the authorities take note of this and place law enforcement officers in the vicinity of the recycling center so that everyone behaves their best.
