Sarawak needs RM17 billion to comprehensively upgrade and redevelop all its healthcare facilities, according to Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni. He highlighted that 206 health clinics in the state are in a dilapidated condition, with 39 of these clinics approved for an allocation of RM19 million for upgrades this year.
"The Sarawak government presented this RM17 billion figure to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The amount covers not just the replacement of clinics but also the redevelopment of all healthcare facilities across Sarawak," Lukanisman said. He explained that the substantial investment involves several Malaysia Plan series and a priority list based on urgent needs. For example, the construction of the Biawak Health Clinic in Lundu is crucial due to its proximity to the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex.
Speaking at the launch of the Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat Tour Series and the ASEAN Dengue Day celebration in Kuching, Lukanisman elaborated on the comprehensive development plan. This plan includes upgrading quarters or residences for Health Ministry staff, particularly in rural and remote areas. Some clinics, such as the Singai Health Clinic in Bau, require complete demolition and rebuilding, necessitating a larger budget.
Lukanisman also provided an update on the Petra Jaya Hospital in Kuching, which is now over 70 percent complete and expected to be fully operational by August 2025. "We cannot rush the development of this hospital. Unlike school construction, it involves complex technical issues. However, the project is progressing well, and we anticipate that construction work will exceed 80 percent completion by the end of this year," he noted.
The event, held in Kampung Pueh, was officiated by Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. It aims to provide comprehensive healthcare services to residents, reflecting the government's commitment to improving health infrastructure in Sarawak.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, Lukanisman called on the public to support the Health Ministry's initiatives to enhance healthcare services. The ministry is focused on ensuring that both urban and rural populations have access to quality medical care, recognizing the critical role of well-maintained health facilities in achieving this goal.
