Sarawak is once again setting an example for the rest of Malaysia when it comes to inclusivity in education. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has reaffirmed his administration’s strong and unwavering support for Chinese independent schools, declaring them not just as learning institutions but as part of Sarawak’s rich cultural and educational heritage.

Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of SM Kai Dee on August 23, 2025, Abang Johari highlighted the state government’s recognition of the role these schools play in shaping Sarawak’s identity. “Chinese independent schools are part of our shared heritage and identity,” he stressed, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the government and the community.

With action than words, the Premier pointed to the state’s consistent financial commitment, which includes an annual RM10 million grant for the 14 Chinese independent schools. Sarawak has already provided nearly RM92 million into supporting these schools so far, and this year alone, another RM22 million has been allocated for Chinese-aided primary and secondary schools. This, he said, reflects the state government’s deep respect for the Chinese community’s dedication to education.

Sarawak has taken a significant step forward by officially recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), allowing its graduates to join the state civil service and further their studies at state institutions. From 2026, UEC graduates will be eligible for free tertiary education at Sarawak’s state-owned universities, with the inclusion of UNIMAS, Centexs, i-CATS, Curtin Malaysia, and Swinburne Sarawak.

According to Abang Johari, this policy guarantees that every child - regardless of ethnicity, background, or financial means - has equal access to higher education. He urged students to seize these opportunities, reminding them that the state is preparing its youth for a future driven by knowledge, technology, and innovation.

The Premier stressed that Sarawak is prioritising STEM education and digital literacy while preparing its youth for future-driven sectors such as the hydrogen economy, aerospace, carbon trading, and satellite innovation. More than academic recognition, he emphasised the importance of equipping students with practical life skills. He emphasised that by teaching youth “how to fish,” they will not only secure their own future but also play a role in charting Sarawak’s path forward.

With such policies, Sarawak is positioning itself as a beacon of inclusive education, balancing heritage with progress. By bridging respect for cultural tradition with a vision for innovation, Abang Johari’s leadership is building more than schools: it is building the future of Sarawak’s young leaders.
