KUCHING: A former nurses’ hostel on Jalan Crookshank is set to be transformed into an Anjung Kasih facility. The building, located opposite Sarawak General Hospital (HUS), will offer accommodation for patients’ families and underprivileged patients traveling from other districts.
Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri (pic) said this project marks the second phase of Anjung Kasih in the area. The first phase is already operational at HUS.
“This phase will repurpose the existing heritage building, preserving its historical value while meeting present-day needs,” she said. She expressed gratitude to the Sarawak state government and Yayasan OBYU for supporting the project.
Nancy stated that the ministry is awaiting official correspondence from the Sarawak Social Welfare Department and the state government. This correspondence is regarding the construction of the new facility.
“After the building is ready, YKN will take responsibility for outfitting it,” she said. She added that Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) will furnish and equip it to become fully functional.
In a related development, Nancy highlighted contributions to expand Anjung Kasih facilities across Sarawak. She noted expansions in Bintulu, Sibu and Miri.
“We are especially grateful to the Bintulu Port Authority for helping to establish Anjung Kasih in Bintulu,” she said. She added that the hospital there previously had no dedicated facility for this purpose.
Similar amenities are now available at several other locations across the state. Nancy noted that there are currently 19 Anjung Kasih facilities operating nationwide.
