The state government, under the leadership of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, has initiated a strategy to strengthen the state civil service by recruiting professionals and experts from the private sector. Premier Abang Johari emphasized the importance of incorporating insights from individuals with diverse backgrounds and expertise, ensuring that the state government can align its development strategies with contemporary technology and environmental considerations.

Speaking at the Premier’s Department Chinese New Year celebration, Premier Abang Johari highlighted the significance of environmental, social aspects, and good governance (ESG) in the state's development trajectory. By bringing professionals from the private sector into the civil service, the government aims to leverage their current knowledge and innovative approaches to enhance decision-making processes.

To further enrich the capabilities of senior government officers, the state government plans to send them for short courses at various tertiary institutions, including renowned institutions like Harvard University. These courses will expose officers to contemporary methodologies for problem-solving, allowing them to engage in syndicated discussions on case studies. Premier Abang Johari emphasized the practical application of knowledge gained through these courses in addressing governmental challenges.

Acknowledging the changing landscape of governance and policymaking, Premier Abang Johari expressed the government's commitment to formulating practical and current policies. He emphasized the significance of adapting to the new era and outlined the state government's focus on technology and energy as key drivers for Sarawak's development. The ultimate goal is for Sarawak to achieve developed state status with high income by the year 2030.

While Sarawak has gained recognition as a high-income state by the World Bank, Premier Abang Johari acknowledged the challenge of translating this economic success into improved household income for the people. Identifying and leveraging the state's strengths are essential components of the government's strategy to enhance competitiveness and contribute to the overall well-being of Sarawak's residents.

In essence, the state government's proactive approach involves a multi-faceted strategy, including talent acquisition from the private sector, capacity-building through educational initiatives, and a commitment to shaping policies that align with contemporary challenges and opportunities. As Sarawak navigates this new era, the integration of expertise from various sectors is envisioned to contribute significantly to the state's sustainable development and economic prosperity.
