KOTA KINABALU: The Sarawak–Sabah Power Grid Interconnection was officially energised on Saturday, linking both state grids to strengthen electricity reliability across the region.

The 275kV Lawas–Mengalong transmission line, part of a 326-kilometre network with 881 towers, currently supplies up to 50MW from Sarawak to Sabah, with power exchange having begun in December after successful system synchronisation.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor attended the ceremony at the Sabah International Convention Centre, describing the project as a strategic milestone for regional energy security and economic development.

The interconnection is Borneo’s second regional power link after the Sarawak–West Kalimantan interconnection completed in 2016.
