KUCHING, Aug 10 — All schools in Sarawak have been urged to continuously monitor Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in their respective areas amid the transboundary haze currently affecting the state.

The Sarawak Education Department (JPNS) said all educational institutions under its purview had been instructed to postpone all outdoor activities if the weather was too hot.

It said in areas where API readings exceeded 100, all outdoor activities involving students must be suspended.

“Educational institutions must stay updated on developments through the media regarding the haze situation in their respective areas or districts and comply with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health from time to time,” JPNS said in a statement today.

The department also advised students to wear face masks and drink adequate amounts of water frequently to regulate their body temperature.

“Schools should also ensure an adequate supply of clean drinking water and encourage students to bring their own drinking water.

“They should also remain vigilant and cooperate with nearby clinics and hospitals in the event of any complications involving students due to hot weather,” it said.

The number of areas in Sarawak recording unhealthy API readings due to transboundary haze rose to nine this morning.

Based on the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), the areas were Kuching (161), Samarahan (161), Serian (179), Sri Aman (155), Sarikei (155), Sibu (158), Mukah (156), Bintulu (142) and Samalaju (141).

An API reading of zero to 50 indicates good air quality, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy, while readings above 300 are hazardous.

API data is updated hourly based on readings from 68 air quality monitoring stations nationwide. — Bernama
