Sarawak is ready to lend its support to the Federal Government in advancing sports throughout Malaysia, as expressed by Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He emphasized Sarawak’s dedication to excellence, which was clearly demonstrated through the successful hosting of the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
Speaking at the SUKMA 2024 closing ceremony, Abang Johari highlighted the state's commitment to providing top-tier services during the event. He expressed hope that Sarawak’s efforts would serve as a benchmark, not just in the realm of sports, but in fostering a broader agenda of unity and camaraderie among athletes and the youth.
“Sarawak has provided the best services, and we hope this will set a standard not only for sports but for the larger goal of promoting friendship among athletes and youth," he said. "Of course, perfection is elusive; if there were any shortcomings, I apologize. However, overall, we have given our best for all Malaysians,” Abang Johari remarked during the event held at Unity Stadium in Kuching.
The closing ceremony, marking the end of the biennial Games held from August 17,24, was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The event also saw the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, further underlining the importance of the occasion.
Throughout the course of SUKMA 2024, Abang Johari observed that Malaysians from all corners of the country, including athletes from Brunei, displayed a remarkable spirit of harmony. He noted that the unity among the youth was evident as they competed with commendable sportsmanship, with some even setting new records during the Games.
“The reality is that the unity among our youth shone through during the competition, as they not only displayed high levels of sportsmanship but also set new benchmarks in SUKMA 2024,” he added, reflecting on the positive outcomes of the event.
SUKMA 2024 was a grand event featuring 37 sports, encompassing a total of 488 events. This included 236 events for men, 217 for women, and 35 mixed-gender events. These competitions were spread across nine divisions in Sarawak Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri.
This year marked the third time that Sarawak has had the honor of hosting SUKMA since the Games' inception in 1986, having previously hosted the event in 1990 and 2016. The successful organization of SUKMA 2024 is a testament to Sarawak's capability and enthusiasm for promoting sports and unity across the nation. As the Games concluded, the spirit of sportsmanship and unity fostered during this event is expected to leave a lasting impact on the Malaysian sports landscape, with Sarawak standing as a proud contributor to this national effort.
