SARAWAK will establish its own hydrogen certification platform in line with international benchmarks to ensure transparency, traceability, and uphold market integrity as it moves to become a key player in the global green hydrogen economy.
Premier of Sarawak, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, made the announcement during his keynote address titled “Sarawak’s Hydrogen Vision: Catalysing Green Growth for ASEAN and Beyond” at the Asia Hydrogen Conference 2025 held in Tokyo today, according to a statement from the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).
He said Sarawak is actively pursuing long-term international offtake agreements to build investor confidence and attract large-scale investments into its hydrogen sector.
“The state government has taken proactive steps through the launch of the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER), a long-term plan that positions Sarawak as a cost-competitive, reliable, and scalable hydrogen producer,” he said.
“More importantly, Sarawak is investing in technology and innovation because we recognise that continuous improvement is key to remaining competitive in an evolving energy landscape.”
Abang Johari also revealed that Sarawak is exploring the potential of developing a joint certification platform that could be adopted at both ASEAN and international levels.
He stressed that any such standards must be aligned with global benchmarks, noting that over the longer term, such a platform could act as a catalyst for the development of voluntary carbon markets.
He added that to support the initiative effectively, it must be backed by strong enablers including sound governance, infrastructure, financing, workforce development, and regulatory clarity—factors he described as essential for Sarawak to emerge as a regional leader in hydrogen.
The Premier is currently in Tokyo for a two-day official visit, specifically to attend the high-level hydrogen conference. - July 10, 2025
