I have high respect of a sergeant (sarjan in Bahasa Melayu) who is a middle-level rank in most militaries, police forces, and other uniformed organizations, responsible for supervising and guiding junior members. In the military, sergeants often lead a platoon or section, while in policing, they are a first-level line manager responsible for daily supervision, training, and performance of their team. Their duties include ensuring standards are met, and managing operational activities like patrol, corrections & investigation reports. They combine general law enforcement duties with their specialized field of expertise.

I learned from my best neighbor, Sarjan Hamdan who has just retired from Putrajaya District Police Headquarters (IPD) after serving PDRM for 40years, that “My family & I are fortunate to live with other government officers in Putrajaya housing precinct in assisting public safety & community engagement. In essence, my job as a traffic sergeant is to ensure the safe and efficient movement of traffic while leading and mentoring my team to uphold standards.”

I admire Sarjan Hamdan and his wife, Fauziah for maintaining strong relationships with the neighbors and families, especially the youth and children by fostering closeness in communication, and active listening. My children & grandkids lovingly addressed them as Abah (dad) & Mak Ji (mom) respectively. We're so engaged in our day-to-day lives that we felt lost when they decided to leave our neighborhood to return for hometown in Perak upon retirement.

Sarjan Hamdan said, “I thought the stress of work would kill me, now I'm afraid the freedom of retirement will if I do not rewire for a second career in life. I am going to venture to social entrepreneurship in Perak Sejahtera 2030 which is a growing sector focused on creating financially sustainable businesses to address social and green environment issues. It is defined by the dual mission of social impact and government initiatives for development programs.” (www.peraksejahtera.com)
