If wedding planners ever needed proof that Malaysian couples can get a little too creative while preparing for their big day, look no further than the engaged couple in Kluang who decided to take their relationship for a cautious, human-mechanical “test drive” - only to have their brakes slammed hard by the Johor Religious Department (JAINJ) instead.
According to JAINJ, as reported by WeirdKaya, the soon-to-be husband and wife were scheduled to tie the knot in just one month. But apparently, the pressure of wedding preparations - combined with the challenges of long-distance romance - sparked a sudden curiosity to “test their mechanical stability.” So intense was this curiosity that officers had to knock on their hotel door for a full five minutes in the dead of night - long enough for other guests to wonder if housekeeping had started offering midnight room service.
When the woman finally opened the door, she confidently declared she was alone. Of course, nothing says “alone” quite like a man in long pants and a T-shirt hiding under a table, hoping to blend in with the hotel furniture. Unfortunately for him, he was not a lamp, nor a decorative vase, and certainly not invisible.
Once officers turned on the lights, the “table décor” suddenly came to life - and with it, the couple’s entire explanation unraveled faster than the hotel bedsheets, which JAINJ described as looking like “a mess after the storm.”
The couple gave an elaborate explanation that they had just left the man's house after meeting the future mother-in-law. They simply wanted a quiet place to discuss wedding matters. Because nothing says “discussing centrepieces and catering” like checking into a hotel room at 1.30am with the lights off and someone crouched undercover like a contestant in Fear Factor.
When questioned further, the couple finally admitted they wanted to “test drive” each other before their marriage became halal. Think of it as a premarital quality-control inspection - except the inspectors showed up ahead of schedule and caught them right in the middle of evaluating their own satisfaction levels.
JAINJ, naturally, was not amused. Malaysians online, however, reacted the way Malaysians always do: by preparing memes at lightning speed.
Regardless of moral views, one thing is clear - wedding preparation is stressful. Some couples test dress fittings, food testings, sound systems checks, and apparently, some test each other physically. But if there’s any lesson to be learned from this incident, it’s simple:
If you’re going to “test drive” anything, make sure it’s a car - not your fiance, not in a hotel room, and definitely not while the religious authorities are doing their nightly surveillance.
So the real question Malaysians are asking now is simple: did they pass the “test drive”… or did the engine stall halfway? Only the couple - and perhaps one very traumatised hotel table - will ever know.
One thing’s for sure: whatever the results, explaining it to their elders or in-laws is going to be far more nerve-wracking than any premarital “inspection” they attempted that night.
