Sayang, Dear At The Workplace Now Sexual Harassment

The Public Services Commission of Malaysia (SPA) has recently announced that calling a fellow colleague with terms of endearment such as “sayang” or “dear” may land you in hot soup!

Stating that calling someone “sayang” or “dear” in the workplace as both harassment and disciplinary offences for government departments and agencies on a checklist, it also state that “sexting” is also a form of harassment.

Stated under ‘Larangan-larangan serta perkara khusus‘, Sexual Harassment – Rules 4A, PSC drew up a checklist, refining charges against civil servants if found guilty.

Victims must specify the form/extensiveness of sexual harassment – if they were touched, caressed, kissed or hugged, in their complaint to the disciplinary board.

“(Victims) must also specify if any of the above actions made them feel uneasy, insulted or disturbed.”

Specifying other forms of misconducts, those found guilty may face punishment in the form of a demotion, run the risk of getting fired or be detained by the authorities.
